FIRE AND ICE
This abstract piece on gallery canvas with quality acrylic paints contains the hot reds and bright oranges of the sun contrasting with the cool whites and blues typical of an icy cold environment, such as space. “Fire and Ice” is one part of a three-piece series done in conjunction with my original piece called "Blue Waves", all of which work well together in terms of color and style. I shaped this piece using two different sizes of palette knives and lots of patience to carefully mix a large variety of colors. I particularly enjoy using palette knives because they allow me to create a unique “impressionistic” look and sense of movement. In this piece the hot left side of the painting begins with bright reds and orange colors and then cools as the eye moves to the right, first going to yellow and white, and then fading more with blues, greens, and blacks, just as the distance from the sun in space moves from bright to dark. Before beginning this painting, I prepared the canvas with a color gesso to add durability. After completing the painting, I waited one week for the paint to dry thoroughly and I then applied two coats of varnish to preserve the surface. I use this multi-step process with all my paintings to prevent fading and ensure the piece has long-lasting quality and visual appeal for many years to come.
